Community members enjoyed a wonderful Firemen’s Ball Saturday, June 10, 2017 provided by emergency and auxiliary members of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department.
A larger crowd was welcomed with 500 guests in attendance and a large tent was placed in the parking lot, extending the area for dancing and eating out from the firehouse bays.
Guests began to arrive around 6 and the tables filled up with many familiar faces. Mingling over hors d’oeuvres provided by the restaurants in the area, Ball guests were guided to their table and chatted with those around them at the round tables, finding many friends among the guests.
A full roast beef dinner was served. Past Chief Bill Tobin was back with his crew tending the roasts and cooking them to perfection.
All of the KVFD members present, including emergency, veterans and auxiliary, stepped through the crowd single file to the Grand March. It is a longstanding tradition and the Ball attendees responded by saluting the members with a standing ovation. The six-member Ball Committee was saluted by all. The organizers were Karren Garrity, Jean Speck, Mary Ann VanValkenburg, Leila Erskine, Rebecca Trautman and Darlene Brady.
A live band, Those Guys, played through the evening. After the Grand March, the dancing began and continued for hours. Many went home with tired feet and smiles on their faces, having enjoyed a wonderful community event with friends and neighbors.
The evening is thought of as a “grown up prom” and marks the ushering in of the summer season in Kent.
